One Piece in English: where it stands before volume 113

One Piece is a manga by Eiichirou Oda. It started in Japan in 1997. It is still running there today. Volume 113 is the next one due in English. That makes this a good moment to check where the series stands. It is also a good moment to decide if you want to start.

What One Piece is about

The hero is Monkey D. Luffy. When he was small a pirate crew stayed in his village. He has wanted to be a pirate ever since. While they were there he ate a strange fruit. He had no idea what it was. It was a Devil Fruit. Now his body is made of rubber. The catch is that he sinks like a stone in the sea.

At seventeen Luffy sets out in a little boat. He has no crew at all. His goal is the One Piece. That is the treasure of the late King of the Pirates. Luffy wants that title for himself. First he needs people to sail with. Early on he meets a timid boy who dreams of joining the navy. He also meets Zoro. Zoro is a swordsman who is being held captive.

The tone swings between slapstick and sincere emotion. Fights are often won by pure stubbornness. The series is listed as action, adventure, comedy and fantasy. It suits you if you want a long adventure. The cast is big. The world keeps growing as you read.
