Picture a gangster story in a city that looks a lot like mid-century New York, then make the mob vampires. In Gran Familia, people born with monstrous traits are feared and pushed to the margins. The underworld answers to a vampire clan. Its young heir, Leo, spends his days as a goofy restaurant worker beside demi-human friends like Zack the golem and Rose the mandrake. At night he becomes a menacing figure who commands blood and can scatter into bats. What he wants is peace between humans and demis. That is a tall order once rival gangs start a turf war, and at least one high-ranking cop wants every demi gone. Early stories are mostly self-contained rescues. It suits shonen readers who like mafia drama mixed with monster lore and a hero who lives a double life.
