Kingdom is set in China in the third century BC. Seven warring states are fighting for control. Shin is a servant boy in Qin who lost his parents to the wars. He and his best friend spar with wooden swords every day. Their plan is to rise from nothing and become great generals. Then a power struggle at the royal palace drags Shin into a fight to protect the boy king of Qin. History knows that king as the ruler who later united China as its first emperor. Kingdom is a war epic built on huge battles, military strategy and court politics. It suits readers who like historical fiction and large-scale tactics. It also suits fans of an underdog who climbs the ranks one battle at a time.
