Tanya Degurechaff wants a quiet post far from the fighting. Her real problem is the entity she mockingly calls Being X. Unless she dies naturally and comes to believe in Being X, her soul goes to hell. She was once an atheist Tokyo salaryman. A man he had fired was killing him when Being X appeared, claimed to be God and got laughed at. Its reply was rebirth as an orphan girl in the Empire, an alternate Imperial Germany where magic is a weapon of war. Hardship is meant to make her pray. Promotion is her route to that quiet post, so she joins the mage corps and turns ruthless and efficient. Her own troops' lives come second. Chika Tojo draws this manga version of Carlo Zen's novels. It suits fans of military fantasy with a cold, cynical lead.
