How to read Haikyu!! in English: where to start

What Haikyu!! is about

Haikyu!! is a volleyball manga by Haruichi Furudate. It mixes comedy, drama and sports. It also leans into coming of age, school club life and a bit of philosophy.

The hero is Shoyo Hinata. He is short for a volleyball player. He makes up for it with speed and a huge jump. His middle school team barely existed. He built it out of beginners and friends he borrowed from other clubs. They played one official match. It was against Kitagawa Daiichi and its genius setter Tobio Kageyama. Hinata's side had no chance.

For high school Hinata picks Karasuno High. His hero once played there. On his first day in the volleyball club he runs into Kageyama. The two butt heads at once. Still they have to learn to play as a team.

The cast is wide. Teammates and rivals both get their own goals and doubts. Matches stretch over many chapters. Each rally stays easy to follow. The series is also very funny. It suits sports fans. It also works for anyone who loves an underdog or a pair of rivals who push each other.
