What Tokyo Ghoul is about

Ken Kaneki is a shy university student. He would rather read a book than make small talk. His first date with a girl he admires ends in an attack. An accident follows. Surgeons keep him alive with an emergency organ transplant.

After that, normal food makes him retch. He craves something he will not admit to. Kaneki is now half ghoul. Ghouls pass for human and blend into the crowds of Tokyo. Human meat is the only food that keeps them alive. Anteiku is a quiet coffee shop with a staff of secret ghouls. It gives Kaneki a job and a crash course in how their world works.

At its core this is horror about a young man who no longer knows what he is. The genres are action, horror, mystery, psychological and supernatural. Gore and cannibalism sit at the center of it. Survival and urban fantasy are big themes too. It suits older teens and adults who like their urban fantasy dark.
