Ken Kaneki is a shy university student who would rather read than talk. His first date with a girl he admires ends in an attack. An accident follows and surgeons save him with an emergency organ transplant. Normal food now makes him retch. He is hungry for something he refuses to accept. Kaneki has become half ghoul. Ghouls pass for human and blend into Tokyo's crowds. Human meat is the only food that keeps them alive. Anteiku, a quiet coffee shop secretly staffed by ghouls, gives him a job and a crash course in their rules. Tokyo Ghoul is a horror story about a young man who no longer knows what he is. It suits older teens and adults who like dark urban fantasy. Gore and cannibalism are central to it.
