What the story is
The Promised Neverland is a manga by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu. It started in Japan in 2016. It mixes drama, fantasy, horror, mystery, psychological and thriller.
The setting is Grace Field House. It is an orphanage that stands alone in a forest. Dozens of children live there. Emma is eleven and one of the oldest. Every child has a number tattooed on the neck. They sit hard tests each day. Their caretaker is Isabella. The children call her Mom and they adore her.
Now and then a child leaves to join a new family. Little Conny is the next to go. She leaves her stuffed rabbit behind. Emma and Norman run it out to the gate. Nobody is allowed there. What they see at the gate tells them where those children really go.
The two of them bring in Ray. He is the only other kid as sharp as they are. Together they start to work on a way out. The plan has to stay hidden. The adult watching them seems to notice everything.
This is a story of plans, bluffs and counterplans. Readers who enjoy tense mind games will feel at home here. So will anyone who likes smart kids up against long odds. The themes include body horror, found family, coming of age and travel. Some scenes are disturbing. Keep that in mind before you pick it up.
