AKIRA

Akira is set in Neo-Tokyo. It sits on landfill in Tokyo Bay. Years before the story a huge explosion wiped out old Tokyo and set off a world war. Kaneda leads a gang of teenage bikers who tear around the city at night. On one run his friend Tetsuo crashes into a strange child with the wrinkled face of an old man. The army arrives fast and takes Tetsuo away. Soon he starts to change. Kaneda gets pulled into a fight between the military and an underground resistance. Both sides are after the same secret. Its name is Akira. Katsuhiro Otomo draws the city in obsessive detail and stages huge action scenes. It suits readers who want serious science fiction about power, youth and government control. Expect strong violence and some gore.
