Phoenix

火の鳥

Hi no Tori

Phoenix is a set of self-contained stories joined by one creature. The phoenix is a bird of fire, and its blood is said to give eternal life. Each story takes place in its own era. Some go back to the distant past. Others jump to the far future and into space. The order swings between the two, and the stories seem to move toward the present day. In every era someone hunts for immortality. Tezuka treats it as either out of reach or a curse. Reincarnation is the natural path instead. Familiar faces return across the stories. A man named Saruta shows up again and again as different ancestors and descendants, each facing hard trials. Osamu Tezuka regarded the series as the work of his life. It suits readers interested in manga history and big philosophical science fiction and fantasy.
