Houseki no Kuni

Ages from now twenty-eight gems in human form live on the last strip of land left on Earth. Each gem has its own color and hardness. They do not age and broken gems can be pieced back together. Raiders from the moon called Lunarians attack to carry them off. The gems fight back with swords under the watch of their teacher. The youngest gem is Phosphophyllite, called Phos. A hard knock leaves Phos in pieces. So instead of a sword Phos gets a desk job: writing an encyclopedia of the natural world. Land of the Lustrous pairs stark and elegant art with sword fights and quiet philosophy. The gems have no gender. It suits readers who like strange worlds and big questions about identity and change.
