In 1878 carrying a sword in public is against the law, and the samurai class is fading away. A mysterious invitation is passed around the country. It calls samurai and other skilled fighters to Tenryu-ji in Kyoto and promises a fortune. Shujiro Saga is one of nearly three hundred who answer. He needs the money because cholera threatens his family. The event turns out to be a killing game. Every entrant gets a wooden tag, and the only way to gain more is to kill whoever holds one along the Tokaido on the way to Tokyo. Shujiro is not looking for company. Yet he ends up shielding Futaba, a young girl who entered to save her sick mother. Drawn from Shogo Imamura's novel, this is a gory historical death game for fans of battle royale stories.
