At the Mongol court a captive named Fatima is quietly working toward revenge. She got there the hard way. The name belonged to the widow who raised her in Tus, a city of the Khwarazmian Empire. She came to that house of scholars as an orphaned slave, and the family let her study. Then Tolui's army stormed Tus early in the thirteenth century. Her mistress died protecting her and the Mongols took her away to their homeland. She now wears that name and plans to turn everything she learned against the empire that took it all. Töregene, a wife of the Great Khan Ögedei, comes to play a key part in those plans. It is historical drama with slavery and war at its core. Readers who like court intrigue and clever heroines should take a look.
