The Apothecary Diaries is set in an imperial court inspired by old China. Maomao grew up in the pleasure district. The apothecary who raised her taught her medicine. Kidnappers grab her and sell her into the emperor's inner palace as a low-ranking maid. She plans to keep her head down until her term of service ends. Then she hears that the emperor's infant children keep falling ill. Maomao has a good guess about the cause and leaves an anonymous warning. A strikingly handsome official named Jinshi tracks her down and makes her a food taster for one of the consorts. Maomao is blunt and loves poisons a little too much. Most chapters bring a small mystery that she untangles with medical knowledge. It suits readers who like historical mysteries and court intrigue with a sharp heroine.
