Omnibus and 2-in-1 manga: which English book holds which volume

The Climber has 17 Japanese volumes. VIZ Media printed it in English as 8 books. Gantz has 37 volumes and 12 omnibus books from Dark Horse. When one English book holds more than one Japanese volume, the number on the spine stops matching the Japanese count. It gets hard to tell where you are in a series and which book comes next.

Mangainfo counts every series by its Japanese volumes. A book that holds two volumes shows as a range, such as Vol. 1-2. The lists below come from the tables we keep for these editions. Each table names its source.

Two volumes in one book

• Goodnight Punpun from VIZ Media: 13 volumes in 7 books. Books 1 to 6 hold two volumes each. Book 7 holds volume 13 alone.
• Vinland Saga from Kodansha: 29 volumes in 15 hardcover books. Books 1 to 14 hold two volumes each. Book 15 holds volume 29.
• The Climber from VIZ Media: 17 volumes in 8 books. Books 1 to 7 hold two volumes each. Book 8 holds volumes 15 to 17.
• I Am a Hero from Dark Horse: 22 volumes in 11 omnibus books of two volumes each.
• Steel Ball Run from VIZ Media: two volumes per book. Books 1 to 9 hold volumes 1 to 18. The series has 24 Japanese volumes.
• Stone Ocean from VIZ Media: books 1 to 7 hold volumes 1 to 14, two per book.
• Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! from Seven Seas: an omnibus with two volumes per book. Books 1 to 4 hold volumes 1 to 8.

Three volumes in one book

Gantz from Dark Horse puts 37 volumes in 12 omnibus books. Books 1 to 11 hold three volumes each. Book 12 holds volumes 34 to 37.

Why the last book is often different

A count that does not divide evenly leaves volumes over at the end. Goodnight Punpun and Vinland Saga end with a book that holds one volume. The Climber and Gantz fold the extra volumes into a thicker last book.

Before you buy

• Check which volumes a book holds on its cover or its back. The number on the spine is the book number.
• Look up the Japanese volume you stopped at. Its page on Mangainfo shows the English book that holds it.
• Some series come out in English both as single volumes and as an omnibus. They are different books with different ISBNs.

How we keep these tables

Each table holds the publisher, the books and the Japanese volumes in each book. It names its source, often the publisher's page or the volume list of the series. When the title of a book disagrees with the table, the book waits for a person to check it. If you see a book in the wrong place, the correction form on the volume page reaches us.
