The Climber

孤高の人

Kokou no Hito

Buntaro Mori is a loner who has just transferred to a new high school. He barely speaks and expects nothing from anyone. A classmate dares him to climb the outside wall of the school building. He does it with no gear at all. Reaching the top gives him a feeling he has never had before. That moment pulls him into rock climbing and then toward the high mountains. The Climber is a slow and intense study of a young man who would rather climb alone. It cares more about obsession and isolation than about rivals or trophies. The art is extremely detailed and every rock face looks cold and dangerous. It suits readers who like serious seinen drama about physical extremes. It can be bleak and it never hurries.
