A friend of Waka Kamikura has disappeared, and the high schooler means to find out what happened. That takes nerve in her Japan. Years ago creatures called gods invaded, and whole cities were abandoned to them. A god can hypnotize people with a look, and ordinary weapons are useless against one. Waka still heads into the sealed danger zone in Tokyo, and there she runs into Sachiyuki Tokinaga, a researcher at an institute devoted to killing gods. He soon notices something in her that links her to them. His bosses see a weapon and want her hunting gods. Tokinaga fears they will simply use her. Readers who like eerie monster stories with a mystery at their core should try it.
