Raido overthinks everything, and his new seatmate gives him plenty to overthink. Aharen is tiny, quiet and almost expressionless. She gets distance wrong both ways, crowding people one minute and drifting out of earshot the next. Her old classmates gave up on her because of it. Raido picks up an eraser she dropped. That is all it takes for her to attach herself to him. His own intimidating face has cost him friends before, so the first-year is glad of the company. Much of the humor comes from Raido reading far too much into her odd behavior. It is a gentle, deadpan school comedy with a sweet bond at its center. Readers who like low-key romcoms should give it a try.
