Children of the Whales

クジラの子らは砂上に歌う

Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau

Aboard the Mud Whale, power comes with an early death. The ship is a huge clay island that sails across the sands. Its people are in their ninety-third year of exile. The Marked have thymia, which lets them shift things by force of will, and they seldom live long. The Unmarked get no power and far more years. Chakuro is Marked, and his job is to write the ship's history down. He knows his own time is short. Nobody in Chakuro's circle has ever met an outsider. That changes when a party sent to scavenge an abandoned island finds a girl who will barely speak. Chakuro calls her Lykos. Her arrival is the first crack in everything the Mud Whale believes about itself. It suits readers who like melancholy fantasy with strange cultures and a slowly unfolding mystery.
