Look Back

ルックバック

Look Back is about two girls who draw. In fourth grade Fujino has a four-panel strip in the school paper. Her classmates rave about it and she eats up the praise. Then the paper starts printing strips by Kyomoto. She is a shut-in from the same grade who never sets foot in school. Her drawing is so far ahead that Fujino's work looks childish beside it. Fujino is stung. She starts drawing every spare minute. The two eventually meet and their rivalry turns into something else. Fujimoto tells it with clean and quiet pages that often go without words. It is a story about ambition and friendship and why people keep making things. Readers who make art of their own will recognize a lot in it. It is best read in one sitting.
